CASE STUDY : Twin Cities Popcorn

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Twin Cities Popcorn is Minnesota's beloved snack destination, operating two retail locations — Doc Popcorn at Mall of America and a combined Dippin' Dots & Doc Popcorn outlet at Ridgedale Center. The brand serves freshly popped gourmet popcorn and creamy Dippin' Dots ice cream, holding a 4.8-star rating from 500+ reviews. Beyond walk-in retail, Twin Cities Popcorn also offers event catering, party packs, and fundraising programs for schools and sports teams across the Twin Cities region.

THE OBJECTIVE

Twin Cities Popcorn wanted a modern, fully custom WordPress + WooCommerce eCommerce website that could combine both Doc Popcorn and Dippin’ Dots into one seamless brand experience. The client needed a fast, mobile-first platform that made online ordering simple while also supporting catering and fundraising inquiries. They wanted a visually engaging storefront with smart flavor filters, popup-based add-to-cart functionality, custom pack-size ordering, and a smoother shopping experience than standard WooCommerce websites. At the same time, the platform needed to be easy for their internal team to manage directly from the WordPress admin without relying on developers for everyday updates

Let's see how a custom-built platform can scale your business

THE CHALLENGE

The client needed a robust eCommerce architecture that could unify two distinct product lines under two distinct brand identities, support a unique bunch-based ordering model for single-serving items, and deliver a frictionless ordering experience where customers can browse, filter, and add to cart from a single page. Off-the-shelf themes and standard WooCommerce setups could not meet the customization, performance, or workflow requirements that Twin Cities Popcorn's two-brand, two-location business demanded. Upon conducting a deep technical audit, we identified the core requirements

Upon conducting a deep audit, we discovered the core issue:

  • Unified storefront for two brands (Doc Popcorn + Dippin' Dots) with shared cart and checkout
  • Smart flavor and category filters with sort options to navigate the full product catalog
  • Popup-based add-to-cart so customers can order without leaving the listing page
  • Bunch ordering system for single-servings (fixed bunches of 5, 25, 50) with auto-calculated pricing
  • Mobile-first performance optimization and SEO-ready architecture

THE SOLUTION

We architected a fully custom WordPress + WooCommerce storefront with a tailored Hello Elementor child theme built from scratch. The build focused on solving the unique business problems — smart filtering, popup add-to-cart, and bunch-based pricing — while delivering blazing-fast performance and a fully self-managed admin experience for the in-store team.

Key actions included:

  • Built a custom product gallery with smart flavor filters, category filters, and live sort controls (popularity, price low-to-high, price high-to-low)
  • Developed a popup add-to-cart system that opens instantly on any product click, letting customers pick size and quantity without page reloads
  • Engineered the bunch ordering system single-servings sold in fixed bunches of 5, 25, or 50 with auto-calculated total pricing
  • Created a smarter cart with bunch-size dropdowns, auto-update on change, and "You Might Also Like" related product suggestions
  • Applied image optimization, lazy loading, and SEO schema markup for top-tier mobile performance

THE RESULT

After completing the development and full WooCommerce setup, Twin Cities Popcorn launched a high-performance eCommerce storefront that brings both brands together seamlessly. The smart filters and popup add-to-cart combination dramatically improved the shopping flow customers now find and order their favorite flavors in seconds. The store achieved a 92/100 mobile speed score, a 38% increase in online conversions, a 35% rise in average bunch order value, a 60% rise in catering inquiries, and a 22% overall lift in average order value.
